"To Code" -- What's That?

Sometimes rules and regulations can seem confusing and even overwhelming. Building codes related to roofing are no exception.

Building codes are intended to protect you. Still, they can make you want to yell, "Help!" when you try to understand all the details. You may be tempted to ignore them and figure your roofer will know those things and take care of them for you.

A professional builder will indeed know about the codes. But you should know a little yourself, so you can be sure you're covered.

For example, the roofing code for Johnson County, Kansas, requires that your roofer be licensed in Kansas. You can't call just any Kansas City Roofer if your home is in Johnson County. (You can call Bill West Roofing. We serve all of Johnson County.)

A roofer in Johnson County can't just put together a roof from any old materials he has lying around, either. A complete, approved roofing system must be used.

In the city of Leawood, you must have a permit for all roofing projects, but in Salinas, you won't need a permit for reroofing or repairs to your roof. In other words, there are state, country, and city regulations, and they will be different from one place to another.

This means that the guy who comes to your door in a truck that's driving all over the country doing quick roofs may not be the right choice. You're better off with an established roofer who knows the building code and follows it. Ask a question -- any question -- and you should get a clear answer. If you don't, look elsewhere.

  42. It's really great when homeowners know about local codes and statutes. I had very rudimentary knowledge of them (as in I knew they were there, and that's it) when we had our roof repaired, and I understood the roofer so much better just because of that. 43. I have been on a few roofs that were made and fixed up by the owners. They were fine for the most part except for one. One of the roofs had a pretty bad job done on it and I actually ended up falling through it. Luckily I landed alright with only a few cuts and bruises.

  46. My rooftop was badly damaged in a recent storm and now it leaks whenever it rains. I am looking into either fixing the existing shingles or going with a different roofing option. Would you recommend that I repair my shingles until they meet code, like you mentioned, or go with a different roofing material?

  47. My parents have aluminum shingles on their house, which is nice because it allows snow that collects on top of it to slide off more easily. The only problem is that some of the shingles get torn off of the roof when there are really strong winds. I know that aluminum shingles aren't supposed to do that. Is there anything they can do to get the shingles to stay down better, or should they just redo the whole roof?

  50. It's so true that most rules and regulations in life are usually meant for our protection. I can totally see how this would relate to roofing. I never realized how much went into roofing and that there were regulations and that you had to have a permit to do roofing. Thanks for the article.

  51. I'm actually really glad they have as many rules and regulations about roofing and construction that they do. It's good to know that the roof you have is sturdy, strong, and will last a long time as well. I've been needing to get a new roof on my house for a while. It was pretty damaged when I accidentally shot an air cannon in my backyard. It apparently cracked a few of the support beams with the shock wave.

  56. Thank you so much for sharing this- I have been struggling with understanding what my city's rules are when it comes to roofing repairs. My friend who lives not too far said I could just make repairs myself, but another friend said that I had to get a permit. It makes sense that the answers were different since they live in different cities. http://www.purvisroofingmaine.com/roofing.html

  57. Before you start any major project on your home, you will want to check up about any permits or regulations that will apply to the project. Most cities require a permit for re roofing or remodels. Your contractor should help you understand how to make your project "up to code".

  58. I couldn't agree more! Roofing codes are there for a reason, but that doesn't make them easy to understand. That's why I'll always hire a professional rather than attempt anything myself. There's already a lot of stress with building a home-- roofing codes are a stress I don't need.

    Jenn | http://uhlconstructionroofing.com

  59. Building codes can be difficult to understand. It's often much easier to call in a professional who knows what he is doing to get the job done. It's important to make sure whoever you hire is properly trained so that there aren't any problems.

  80. Loan Opportunity Offered By Mr, Benjamin That Save My Family From Financial Bondage {lfdsloans@lemeridianfds.com / lfdsloans@outlook.com}

    Hello Everyone, I am Putri Adiratnaa single mom from Jakarta, I would like to share this great testimony on how I got a loan from Mr, Benjamin, when we were driven out of our home when I couldn't pay my bills anymore, After being scammed by various companies online and denied a loan from my bank and some other credit union I visited. My children were taken by the foster care, I was all alone in the street. The day i shamefully walked into an old school mate who introduced me to Daisy Maureen. At first I told her that I am not ready to take any risk of requesting a loan online anymore, but she assured me that I will receive my loan from them. On a second thought, due to my homelessness I had to take a trial and applied for the loan, luckily for me I received a loan of $80,000.00 from Mr, Benjamin. I'm happy I took the risk and applied for the loan. My kids have been given back to me and now I own a home and a business of my own. All thanks and gratitude goes to Le_Meridian Funding Service and for the help of Mr, Benjamin for giving me a meaning to life when i had lost all hope. If you currently seeking for a loan assistance, you can contact them via: { lfdsloans@outlook.com / lfdsloans@lemeridianfds.com} Or WhatsApp +1-989-394-3740
